President Richard Nixon signed the national speed limit into law

Date : 1974-January-02

Country/Region : United States of America (USA)

Description :

President Richard Nixon signed a national law setting a speed limit for vehicles on January 2, 1974. This law established a maximum limit for the speed at which vehicles could travel on highways and other roads within the United States.

Here, speed limits higher than 55 miles per hour (89 km/h) were prohibited under Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act. This Act was drafted in response to oil price spikes and supply barriers during the oil crisis in 1973. This remained the law until 1995. This Act was aimed to force Americans to drive at speeds deemed more fuel-efficient.
