Sober Island - A nature reserve in the Indian Ocean

Sober Island is located near the Trincomalee harbor in Sri Lanka. The environment of this island is attractive. It consists of the ruins of Dutch, French, and British buildings, World War II gun positions, and underground ammunition storage complexes. These ruins provide historical value to this island. This island is also called the Island of Sun.
Sober Island is one of the most suitable places for bird watching, such as Sea Eagles. At present, there is a resort called "Sober Island Resort". Travelers can see panoramic views of the Trincomalee harbor from the highest point of this island.
During British colonial rule, it is believed that Sober Island was used as an important transit camp between Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Far East.
Initially, this island was acquired by the French. In 1784, the British occupied it after the Treaty of Paris. Then, they developed the island for their military requirements. This island was named “Sober” in remember of the late young British Lieutenant S.Sober.
Travelers can reach this island from Trincomalee along the Trincomalee road by passing Kavaddikudah, Neddumkudah, and Tirukkalkudah.
