World Environment Day

Date : 5th June

Description :

World Environment Day is a global celebration and it is a platform for public outreach to protect our natural environment. Also, this day encourages worldwide environment protection activities and requests all of us to protect our natural surroundings. As per the estimated data, 7 million people around the world die each year due to air pollution, with a majority occurring in the Asia-Pacific region. World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5th June all over the world since 1973. It is the main way of the United Nations for encouraging awareness and actions for the protection of the environment. This day is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

World Environment Day was declared by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in the year 1972. It was established as the result of the discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. The first World Environment Day was held in the year 1973 with the theme of "Only One Earth".

This day uses to increase awareness of environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, air pollution, and wildlife crime. Each year, the United Nations Environment Programme provides a theme and forum for governments, non-government organizations, communities, celebrities, and businesses to advocate environmental issues.

Today, the environment is in an emergency due to environmental issues. Therefore, we must need to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century.  We need to get urgent actions to solve environmental issues, focusing on living sustainably in harmony with nature.
