World Tuna Day

Tuna includes minerals, proteins, and vitamin B12. It is also rich in Omega-3. Therefore, canned tuna is a common thing in our pantries. Due to the surprising qualities of tuna, the fish are threatened as a result of overwhelming demand. Among the seven main tuna species, 33.3% of the fish stocks are estimated to be fished at biologically unsustainable levels. That is the reason, the United Nations General Assembly decided to officially observe World Tuna Day in December 2016. World Tuna Day aims to raise awareness of a sustainable tuna fishing model.
World Tuna Day is celebrated on 2nd May. This day emphasizes the importance of managing fish stocks to maintain sustainability. Also, this day uses to ensure the world has systems in place to prevent tuna stocks from crashing with proper management. Many countries depend on tuna resources for their food security and nutrition, economic development, employment, culture, and recreation. Tuna has an annual value of almost 10 billion dollars. More than 96 countries are involved in the conservation and management of tuna.
There are more than two dozen varieties of tuna in the world. They are different greatly in size such as Albacore tuna can be 4.5 feet long, Blackfin Tuna can be 3.5 feet long, and Atlantic Bluefin tuna can be up to about 15 ft. But tunas are swift swimmers, and they can reach a speed between 44 and 62 miles per hour. Unfortunately, some tuna species to near-extinction due to over-fishing in some areas of the world. Southern Bluefin tuna can be mentioned as an example of that. More than 7 million metric tons of tuna and tuna-like species are harvested yearly around the world. Therefore, stopping overfishing is very important.
Considering these things, the international legal framework, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has been strengthened by the Code of Conduct for Sustainable Fishery, the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, recommendations of the Review Conference, annual General Assembly resolutions on sustainable fisheries and other efforts by the international community at the global, regional and national levels.
Size, strength, and speed are important characteristics of tuna. Because they are constantly migrating, crossing oceans, and going from one continent to another. Tuna can live in several seas on the planet due to it being an endothermic fish. So, it can change its body temperature as per the situation of water.
