Every year on the 16th of May, the International Day of Living Together in Peace is celebrated around the world. This day requests people to live in a united and peaceful way by respecting, listening, recognizing, and appreciating others. Accepting differences and living in a peaceful and united way are called living together in peace.

The United Nations was established after the Second World War to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems, including by promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion is a purpose of the United Nations. The International Day of Living Together in Peace leads to achieving this purpose of the United Nations.

As per the background of this day, in 1997, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the year 2000 as the "International Year for a Culture of Peace" by its resolution 52/15. In 1998 the General Assembly proclaimed the period 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World." In 1999, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. It uses to promote a culture of peace and non-violence that benefits all of humanity. Later, the United Nations General Assembly declared the 16th of May as the International Day of Living Together in Peace from resolution 72/130.

The object of this day is to uphold the willingness to live and act together, united in differences, to build a sustainable world of peace, harmony, and solidarity. Further, this day invites countries around the world to promote reconciliation to help to ensure peace and sustainable development.
