George Stephenson was an English engineer, and he was the principal inventor and pioneer railway engineer of the railroad locomotive. His father was an engineer at a coal mine. Stephenson worked at this coal mine and learned to read and write during his free time. Then he worked in several coal mines in Northeast England and Scotland. Also, he gained a reputation for managing the primitive steam engines, which were used in coal mines.

In 1814, Stephenson invented the first locomotive. He was appointed as an engineer for the construction of the Stockton and Darlington railway. Then he invented a new locomotive called Rocket. It operated on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in Lancashire in 1830. Stephenson gave pieces of advice as the chief guide for solving problems of roadway construction, bridge design, and locomotive manufacture. Also, he acted as a consultant on many railroad projects.
